Review the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Jumbo 42.2mm Khaki Green White Gold Watch Replica

 Aquanaut is a relatively young collection from Patek Philippe. The first generation, Ref. 5060, debuted in 1997 as the younger brother of the Nautilus. Since then, the collection has evolved into the second generation, the 5065 (1998), and then to the current 5167 (2007). The one we are reviewing here, Patek Philippe Aquanaut Jumbo 5168G Khaki Green White Gold watch replica ref. 5168G (from 2017), known as Jumbo, is a larger version of the current generation Aquanaut. 


The Case


This watch replica 5168G was introduced at Baselworld 2019 with a 42.2mm case in 18K white gold, khaki green dial, and rubber strap. I think it reflects Patek Philippe's positioning of the Aquanaut as a sportier collection in its catalog. For Patek Philippe, 42.2mm is one of the largest watches, and only rivaled by the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, Flyback Chronograph Annual Calendar (both 42mm), and the Celestial (44mm), which is a Grand Complication.


The slim case height of 8.25mm, the flat profile and the almost weightless rubber strap make this copy Patek Philippe Aquanaut Jumbo 5168G extremely attractive to handle. Plus there is the reassuring and luxurious weight of white gold. The finishes are superlative – vertical satin finish on the bezel and polished flanks – and underline the watch’s pedigree. The Dial

Unlike the blue model with its gradient dial, this khaki green dial is uniform and has no colour variations. Coupled with the matte texture, the dial comes across as totally flat and is consequently liberated of reflections. The chequerboard embossing on the dial, with its decoration of parallels and meridians like those found on a globe (evoking world travel?), add volume and interest to an otherwise flat, matte dial.


The white gold Arabic numerals are applied to the dial and filled in with lume as are the markers above the numerals and the thick baton-shaped hands. The luminescence of the Aquanaut is powerful and long-lasting. Offering central hour, minutes and sweep seconds, the date window of the 5168G replica replaces the number ‘3’ and has a white background.

The Strap

The rubber strap of the Aquanaut replica is a big deal. It was a differentiating factor back in 1997 and a provocative lure to attract a younger, hipper, sportier client. As you can see, the embossed pattern on the dial extends all the way to the khaki green strap, which I have to admit is extremely comfortable, flexible, and silky to the touch and feels very good against the wrist. Obviously, the strap is water-resistant but it is also resilient to traction, saltwater and UV radiation and comes with the new patented fold-over clasp with four independent catches.

The Movement

The highly wearable thin case design was made possible by the Cal. 324 S C movement. This caliber made its debut in 2004, and it has since become a classic automatic powerhouse that's also used as the foundation of many other Patek Philippe movements. We often talk about thinness as a sign of quality in mechanical watchmaking, and Patek Philippe was able to come up with this masterpiece based upon its long history in this field. There are several significant design efforts in the Cal. 324 to reduce the thickness, such as offsetting the second wheel that often interferes with the winding rotor, and the third wheel driving the second pinion at the center of the movement instead of the fourth wheel running the seconds hand, which is more typical.


This caliber further shaves the thickness by placing the automatic rotor drive train on the same layer as the hand-winding mechanism and other trains. To make that happen, you'd have to design each train as efficiently and compactly as possible. The replica Aquanaut Ref. 5168 might be, categorically speaking, a simple 3-hander with date, but the watch packs a tremendous amount of attention to detail that is simply unmatched by most watches out there.
